New research from PwC and The Local Data Company has found that closures outstripped the number of stores opening as consumers responded to the changing retail climate and the continued economic uncertainty. 

The analysis of the top 500 town centres in Great Britain covered 67,157 outlets run by retailers operating with more than five outlets across the country, found that in 2017, 116 shops opened and 216 closed across the North East, a net increase of 86 closures compared to 2016.

There was, however, some growth on the region’s high streets, with takeaways, beauty products, pawnbrokers and ice cream parlours among those growing at the fastest rate in 2017. Travel agencies, fashion shops, estate agencies, charity shops, banks/other financial institutions and shoe shops were been among the hardest hit in 2017.
