Recruitment drives need to consider behind-the-scenes employees

The bus operator Go North East, which is already the third largest private employer in the region, has 90 vacancies available after several successful contract bids.

72 driver positions are available. No previous experience is necessary, since Go North East offer training through its own academy. They are also in need of 18 mechanical engineers, to maintain and assist with its 650-strong fleet of buses.

An open day is being held at the Stadium of Light on Sunday 21 October.

When a company increases its staff roster, it is often a good sign of business success and growth. However, sometimes as they expand businesses can forget to focus on the small things that have been ticking away in the background. A prime example of this is the time and attendance management system.

A lot of companies, particularly SMEs without a “factory floor” environment, don’t even have an explicit system. While understandable, this is an oversight which could cost them a lot of lost productivity as they grow.

If Go North East hires these 90 new staff members without a system in place, many people’s workloads will increase needlessly. For example, managers and HR staff who are trying to track the attendance of their new staff in order to approve or deny probation will suddenly have 90 more emails to send, or 90 easily-lost post-it-notes, or even just 90 more phone-calls to find a way of tracking every time someone calls in sick or is otherwise absent without authorisation.

If the staff are paid hourly, then they may have to fill in paper timesheets. These are a horrendous drain on managers and payroll staff, because each one needs to be individually checked, approved, and typed up into the computer system. 90 new timesheets every single week could easily overload the payroll staff who are currently doing it, especially if they have other duties (e.g. admin assistants) as well.

We believe that our automated time and attendance management system will solve or avoid these sorts of issues altogether, by automatically recording attendance, thus providing easy data for HR and eliminating the need for payroll staff to type out handwritten timesheets.
