Plans for building new secondary school in Seaham approved

Plans to build a new secondary school in Seaham, Country Durham, received official approval from local authorities, a recent news report in the local media was able to reveal.

The Seaham School of Technology has been identified by the Education Funding Agency as a ‘priority school’ under the government’s Priority School Building Programme.

The programme was set up by the government to address the needs of the schools in the country most in need of urgent repair, with 261 set to benefit. Every school within the programme is set to be delivered by the end of 2017, with the first to be completed in 2014.

The planning report stated that the existing school located on Burnhall Drive demonstrates the "typical attributes of buildings that are reaching the end of their serviceable life".

The site of the proposed new school at the former Seaham colliery site is approximately 300m to the south of the current location.

Miller Construction submitted the plans, approved by Durham County Council, and is set to undertake the construction of the building.

The school will be two storeys and will accommodate 1,200 pupils, 84 teachers and 102 other staff.

A condition has been attached to the approved plans to "secure targeted skills, training and recruitment opportunities to improve job prospects and employability for local people".
