Office-based systems need tine and attendance too

BGL Group, a financial services company in charge of many well-known brands, will soon launch a £3m technology hub in Sunderland. This will create 40 jobs.

Currently there are more than 700 people employed at BGL in Sunderland. The company is responsible for such well-known brands as comparethemarket.com. The new employees will be a mixture of software engineers, software quality engineers and business analysts, and BGL Group hopes to have the first 20 of them in place by June.

The company’s office at St Catherine Court will be refitted in order to allow the new incoming 40 staff members to work effectively with their colleagues in Sunderland and Peterborough.

Steven Woodford, BGL’s chief technology officer for insurance, distribution and outsourcing, said: "BGL has a long track record of investing in Sunderland via our award-winning contact centre, which has been a key local employer for many years.

"We’re very excited now to be expanding that investment into securing new talent with the digital and software engineering skills which will help us drive the future of our business."

Cllr Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council, added: "This is great news for Sunderland and for its thriving digital and knowledge economies.

"It’s a further vote of confidence in the city from BGL which already employs many hundreds of people in Sunderland. This new investment in a tech hub will create highly skilled technology jobs to boost the city’s software and digital strengths."

Expanding into a new office is a sign that a company is progressing well and is confident about the future. A highly successful company like BGL is no exception.

However, with more than 25 years in the time and attendance industry, we are also very aware that company growth can often outpace the backroom tasks and leave administration staff swamped and struggling.

For example, an influx of new staff can cause problems for HR and payroll staff if there isn’t a robust time and attendance monitoring system in place.

Any company who is still relying on manual forms of attendance management like timesheets, or like relying on the manager’s memory, is risking wage fraud and incorrect payroll accidents.

Our time and attendance system collects attendance data in the centralised software, where payroll staff and supervisors can access it at their leisure to check for irregularities. Our clocking terminals are operated either by radio-frequency smart-card or by fingerprint biometrics scanners.

If a company rents their building rather than own it, and so can’t alter the wiring in their new office to accommodate physical time and attendance clocking terminals, then we have a great alternative in the form of our browser-based and/or app-based Self Service Module. This enables all employees to clock in and out with a click of their mouse!

Many office-based companies don’t see the need for that sort of a system, since they think it’s only useful for hourly staff.

On the contrary; it is not only useful for producing accurate hourly wages but it also provides HR and payroll staff with a swathe of detailed and easy-to-access data about attendance. This can be exported for use in payroll software, or HR staff can use the reporting functions within our software to compose reports for appraisals, disciplinaries and more.
