Mayor makes urgent call for staff


The leader of a local authority in the North East is urging staff to join their local regeneration efforts, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has asked construction managers looking for their next role across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool to apply for vital jobs to drive forward the regeneration of the Teesworks site as work is ramping up with demolition and land remediation projects underway to clear 2,300 acres of land within the 4,500-acre area site.

Experienced construction programme managers are being sought to co-ordinate the delivery of projects and activity as part of the Teesworks Regeneration Programme.”

“My plan for jobs has already created over 500 skilled, well paid jobs on the Teesworks site and these new programme manager roles are opening up even more opportunities to keep local talent working at home,” Houchen said.

“We have some great people on Teesside who are no doubt travelling around the UK to find good-quality managerial opportunities within the construction sector. I want to keep talented local people working close to home and near their families and that’s just what these jobs will do.”

A significant increase in staff numbers can cause unforeseen problems for staff performing HR, admin and accounts job roles if the company’s method of recording time worked has not been updated.

For example, it is very easy for staff to fill in paper timesheets incorrectly. Sometimes this can be deliberate time fraud, but sometimes it is just new staff getting confused, or people forgetting to fill in their timesheets until a week later, by which time they’ve forgotten their exact shift details and are likely to just fudge it.

Even if the details are all correct, most paper timesheets must then be manually transferred to a database (usually an Excel spreadsheet) before being sent to payroll software.

There are many opportunities for human error to kick in during this time-consuming process – e.g. making an unrecognised typo in entering, or misreading employee’s handwriting (1 or 7? O or 0 or D?).

Incorrect data can also foul up HR tasks too, making it much more difficult to spot issues like adherence to the Working Time Directive or someone taking three 30 minute breaks plus lunch.
