How do you record your employees’ attendance? Are you old-fashioned or up to date?

The NWH Group, an environmental and land services provider, has opened its first site in England.

The business previously operated from 8 Scottish locations. A local operations manager has been set up in the Newcastle site, and 9 further jobs have been created. Plans for future expansion and job opportunities are already in the pipeline.

Mark Williams, CEO at NWH Group, said: “We are delighted to be opening our first English site which will enable us to deliver our range of services to businesses in and around Newcastle. This marks a real milestone for us as we continue to forge ahead with our growth strategy for geographical expansion.

“Above and beyond delivering an excellent service to our customers, we are all aiming to make a difference to the environment in which we operate, and we look forward to making a positive impact in Newcastle.”

Initially the business will predominantly offer skip hire, and it will gradually expand the core offering to include other environmental, waste and recycling services as well as access to the fleet of NWH vehicles such as tippers, grab lorries, low loaders and ejector trailers.

Andrew Turnbull, NWH’s operations manager in Newcastle, said: “We are looking forward to getting the site up and running. NWH is a strong family business with a focus on safety and compliance, and an open and friendly way of working which enables us to deliver exceptional customer service. I’m really looking forward to taking this proposition to the market place in Newcastle.”

Moving into a new building is the right time to assess your current time and attendance management system, especially if you are planning to hire new staff.

If you are still recording employees’ attendance using paper timesheets, then you are likely to be making your payroll staff work very inefficiently. All the time that they spend deciphering employee handwriting and typing out hours worked into Excel could doubtless be spent better in other ways. On top of that, paper timesheets are open to time fraud, where employees lie about their hours.

If, as we still see in many office environments, you aren’t using anything at all to record attendances except perhaps a phonecall or email to record a sick day, then you are missing out on data which could improve the way your company or department runs.

For example, do you know how many times a staff member has been late that month? That year? Sometimes it is much easier to spot absence patterns if you have the numbers spread out in front of you in a nice graphical display.

Even assuming that your employees are all good and honest people who have 100% attendance at work, you could still be risking issues if you are not properly monitoring their time at work. This is because if they are working overtime, either paid or unpaid, for a long period of time they could actually be breaching the European Working Time Regulations.

To avoid complications, consider bringing your time and attendance into the 21st century with Time and Attendance North East! We can provide clocking terminals with smartcards and/or biometrics, and our software will work for you whether you’re an SME or a multi-national company.
