Former shipbuilding yard in Wallsend to undergo major redevelopment works

The former Swan Hunter shipbuilding yard in Wallsend is being redeveloped by the North Tyneside Council in a bid to help it become a major manufacturing site within the UK, a news report in the local media has recently revealed.

The £13.8m infrastructure project will include upgrading roads, quay repairs, electricity installations and water drainage improvements on the 34 acre site. The council believes once repairs are completed that the Swans site could become an established hi-tech enterprise zone, attracting 1,000 jobs to the North East.

Mayor Normal Redfearn said: "This essential investment in roads and infrastructure is visible proof of the progress that we are making towards this landmark development.

"We are absolutely determined that Swans will be transformed and it will become one of the UK’s premier sites with a world-class reputation for attracting high quality, hi-tech companies in offshore and renewable energy sector businesses.
