Construction work to start on Northumberland project set to create 100 new jobs

Building work is set to start on a multimillion-pound project in Northumberland that will create 100 new jobs on the long term, a recent news report in the local business media has been able to reveal.

The 14.2m Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre will become one of the UK’s first dedicated landscape discovery centres and is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors.

The construction phase alone is set to bring in more than 100 new jobs to the region and when The Sill is fully operational in summer 2017, it is predicted it will bring in substantial economic benefits to the region with about £5m of additional visitor spending every year.

The initiative has received widespread backing, including £7.8m in National Lottery funding already pledged by the Heritage Lottery Fund earlier this year.

Northumberland National Park chairman, councillor Glen Sanderson, heralded the milestone as the "start of an exciting future" for Northumberland National Park and its partners.

"None of this would have been possible without the support of our funding partners including the Heritage Lottery Fund, North East Rural Growth Fund, Northumberland County Council and a range of philanthropic donors," he said. "We are extremely grateful to them all and everyone who has, and continues to support us on this journey, as we move one step closer to realising The Sill dream."
