Ten-storey student accommodation scheme on Newcastle’s Science Central receives planning permission
Plans to build a ten-storey student accommodation scheme on Newcastle’s Science Central, on a site a site on Saint James’ Boulevard, have been approved, a recent news report in the local business media has been able to find.
The property developed by Nixon Homes will comprise 246 bedrooms, a gym, amenity areas and plat and laundry facilities. It will also take the place of a group of single and two storey L-shaped buildings currently on the site, which are to be demolished.
The applicant has stated that the scheme will result in the creation of full-time and spin-off jobs during construction, as well as further roles within the development upon completion.
The proposal is a revised version of a previous application which was rejected in March last year. At the time, the scheme was earmarked to comprise 269 apartments but Newcastle City Council turned it down for a number of reasons, including the belief that it "would fail to provide a comprehensive development on the Science Central key site" and concerns that the property, by reason of its scale, massing and layout, "fails to take the opportunities available" to improve the character and quality of the area.
As such, changes were made including the removal of the basement floor, reducing the number of rooms, reducing the height of part of the south west wing and altering the external design.
Development projects of this type typically involve a fairly large number of contractors and sub-contractors, and this is specifically the reason why any construction company that will take on the task of carrying out the works should either have in place or implement a solid and reliable time and attendance and access control solution. This is exactly where Time & Attendance North East can put its experience to very good use.
