Recruitment on the menu for North East food manufacturer

A food manufacturer based in County Durham is set to go on a recruitment drive as part of its plans to expand its presence on the North East market, a recent news report in the local business media has been able to suggest.

Family-owned Prima Cheese specialises in the processing and blending of cheese which is primarily used for pizza toppings. It exports into several EU countries as well as the likes of Peru, Singapore, Taiwan, Jordan, Lebanon and the Dominican Republic.

On the back of its growth, Prima Cheese is hoping to expand its factory at Seaham Grange Industrial Estate having submitted plans earlier this year to do so. If the plans for the 13,500 sq ft extension are given the green light, the manufacturer has committed to increasing the size of its 78-strong workforce by 24, meaning it would employ more than 100 staff.

"At present the company has hit maximum capacity in regards to the sales it can generate based on the current premises and its facilities," Prima Cheese said.

"An extension to the premises will allow the company to install a much needed fourth production line, chiller space and accompanying machinery which will cost in the region of £1m.

"The costs of extending and refurbishing the current premises allow for the accommodation of more raw materials and finished goods which will cost in the region of £1.4m.”
