Theatre puts forward plans for £10m development scheme in Newcastle’s Quayside

Live Theatre in Newcastle has proposed a £10m development scheme after purchasing a plot of land on the town’s Quayside, a brand new report in the local media has revealed.

The redevelopment scheme, dubbed LiveWorks, is set to include a commercial office space, a public park and a writing centre for children and young people. The scheme was only made possible after the theatre received a £6m prudential loan from Newcastle City Council and a £1.7m grant from the North East European Regional Development Fund.

Jim Beirne, chief executive of Live Theatre, said: "We are delighted that the support from ERDF and Newcastle City Council has allowed us to purchase the site for LiveWorks. We are excited to move the project into the next phase of design and build."

Nick Forbes, leader of Newcastle City Council also commented: "I’m really glad that the city council has helped Live Theatre to make this exciting new project a reality.

"It demonstrates our continuing commitment to Newcastle’s cultural scene despite the ravages of austerity and underlines our shared belief that culture creates investment and jobs, as well as a great quality of life."
